Poetry by Jennifer N. Shannon

daylight

light deafened

the darkness

appearing

on cue

without hesitation

neither slowly

nor quickly

yet

on time

brilliant

audacious

hierocracy

was in place

and

order restored

daylight

once

again

For a few minutes we caught eyes. Yours smiling with anxiousness, mine accepting, yet
cautious. Words were simple. Quick. Found out we had things in common. Grew up in
neighboring towns, visited similar places. Graduated the same year. Briefly amazed at
how small the world really is, our conversation slowed momentarily to laughter. The light
turned green. Rushed, we said “nice to meet you” eyes shifting from each other to the
road ahead. I turned east, you continued north. We lost sight yet the faint scent of longing
lingered. I sometimes drive that way, at the same time, optimistic that one day we’ll be
beside each other again; at a red light, glancing over to notice those smiling eyes and pick
up where we left off…

I have

looked

into

your eyes

kissed

salt stained

lips

and

been

secretly afraid

to

love you

while

at

the same time

deeply

sincerely

giving

you

all

of me.

bliss

a touch

soft

warm

reassuring

as eyes

flaked

with desire

stare back

into

the soul

of a

frightened

spirit

who

is willing

to give up

everything

fear

lust

doubt

just

to be

in this moment

basking

in the

bliss

of

love

IMG_4142-2Jennifer N. Shannon is an author, writer, and artist. Writing is the place she feels the most free, and even during “work hours” she is often consumed by this overwhelming desire to share experiences, dreams, and anything that has to do with love and truth with those who, like her, want to feel and be more than what is considered the norm. She’s authored and published three books, and two of Jennifer’s short stories were published by Deep South Literary magazine. She’s graciously still pouring her heart into various forms of expression in hopes of inspiring others…this is the first time her poetry has been published.
